2014 winner Nibali to lead Bahrain-Merida at Tour
Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali, 2014 champion and a five-time stage winner on the Tour de France, will lead the Bahrain-Merida team in this year’s race.
It will be 34-year-old Nibali’s eighth Tour and comes after he was forced to pull out last year following a collision with a spectator as he climbed Alpe d’Huez. Nibali will be backed by compatriot Damiano Caruso and Australia’s reigning world time-trial champion Rohan Dennis. Three-time podium finisher Nairo Quintana will head up a strong Movistar team at the July 6-28 tour. The Colombian, second in 2013 and 2015 and third in 2016, will be helped by Spanish duo Mikel Landa and Alejandro Valverde. Landa was fourth in 2017, while the 39-year-old Valverde, the current world road race champion, will be competing in his 12th Tour — he won four stages in his glittering career, making the podium in 2015 when finishing third.
