Barty beats Serena slayer to reach last 8

Australian eighth seed Ashleigh Barty beat Sofia Kenin, who stunned Serena Williams in the third round, to reach her second straight Grand Slam quarterfinal at the French Open yesterday.

Barty won 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 on Court Philippe Chatrier to set up a tie with American Madison Keys.

“It’s my first time this week playing on this beautiful court and I just wanted to come out here and enjoy it,” said the 23-year-old former cricketer. “It (playing cricket) was incredible, it made me more hungry to come back and have success in tennis.”

Barty’s next opponent, the 14th seed Keys, recorded a 6-2, 6-4 win over Katerina Siniakova.

Men’s world No. 1 Novak Djokovic continued his bid to hold all four Grand Slam titles simultaneously for the second time by thrashing Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff in the French Open fourth round yesterday.

The 32-year-old Serbian was in irrepressible form as he romped to a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 victory to set up a quarterfinal against Italian Fabio Fognini who beat fifth seed Alexander Zverev 6-2, 6-7 (8), 6-2, 6-7 (8), 7-5.
