National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine in town

THE National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine will stage two New Year concerts in the city.

Founded in 1918, the orchestra celebrates its centennial anniversary this year.

On December 22, artists will perform representative scores by Johann Strauss and Antonin Dvorak to local audiences.

The repertoire includes “The Blue Danube,” “At the Hunt” and “Wine, Women and Song” and “From the New World.”

The performance on December 23 will feature diverse scores from Franz Liszt’s “Hungarian Rhapsody,” Igor Stravinsky’s “Fire Bird” and Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake.”

Famous Ukrainian conductor Volodymyr Sirenko will conduct the performances.

The classical music will be performed with the piano accompaniment by award-winning pianist Liu Xiaoyu.

Sirenko is compared by critics to brilliant conductors such as Esa-Pekka Salonen and Simon Rattle.

He is an “Honored Figure of Arts” in both Ukraine (1997) and in the Russian Federation (2003). In 2001 he received Ukraine’s most prestigious award — the National Shevchenko Prize.
