Sun, sea, soda and summer schooling

How to improve your learning during the upcoming summer vacation?

I imagine most students will jeer at the thought of studying over the summer vacation.

Most of us have survived five months of school, another five challenging months of e-learning and two weeks of end-of-semester exams and assessments — so, what now? More learning over the summer too? No way!

What happened to the oh-so-relaxing summer we were eagerly anticipating: Sitting on the beach, soda in hand while soaking up the sun? What if I said you can do both: Relax and learn, without any notes, essays, or exams.

The process of learning is more important than memorizing facts from a textbook and far more important than the “end result” we chase.

Learning is about flexibility and acquiring new skills, things we may tend to ignore.

Yes, you can still relax on the beach with a soda in one hand, but what about a book in the other? You may love watching movies and TV shows, but what about watching some in a different language?

Love to explore? Perhaps you can attempt to commute with the local bus. Love to eat? Perhaps you can try to cook a new recipe?

New forms of learning are endless. I would encourage you to add some flexibility to your learning methods.

After all, it is a way of integrating new studying habits and developing a lifelong curiosity to learn.

I intend to pursue hobbies I haven’t had the chance to explore before, such as writing.

Someone once told me to be “stubborn about my goals, but flexible about my methods.”

I guess it’s a case of life giving you lemons and learning how to make lemonade out of it!
