Tech team spikes youth innovation

Three years ago, the concept of Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong Tech Ambassadors was nothing but a vague idea in the back of my mind.

Still reeling from the organization of the initial HakD event, I realized that the entrepreneurial, pragmatic, resilient spirit of student teams during the event was something that could be harnessed into a much bigger and enduring project using a mode of technology to cultivate a culture of innovation and social enterprise.

Thus, the goal and “raison d’être” for the Tech Ambassadors’ team was born. Starting from a modest group of just six or seven students, we outlined ways to help our Dulwich community with both technological tools as well as encourage student projects and ideas.

From Tech Tuesday workshops to virtual reality pizza party events, the common theme amongst all these small, seemingly insignificant events was to highlight the possible, embracing the famed “wackiness” of technological disruption.

Witnessing the growth of the Tech Ambassadors from a handful of students to a community representing a paragon of student leadership has been incredibly fulfilling.

Though tiring and stressful at times, particularly nearer to the HakD event, being president of the Tech Ambassadors over these past few years has been incredibly rewarding in honing my skills, including event organizing, media marketing and public speaking.

Often, “leadership” is seen as a vague, catch-all descriptive phrase that has no true objective meaning. But, having worked and led the Tech Ambassadors’ team, I’ve come to realize that “leadership” by definition cannot be an objective, problem-solving skill, simply because the problems facing the team are constantly changing.True leaders must have a deep understanding of the inner workings of a team and know how each part of the team — whether it be advertising and marketing, technical support, or hospitality and logistics — contributes to the overall cause.

And that is the reason why, after careful consideration, Midori and I would like to welcome Serena and Hervé as our successors, president and vice president of the Tech Ambassadors respectively. As both founding members, who have held numerous key positions in the Tech Ambassadors’ team, they both have an intimate knowledge of the role and rationale for the Tech Ambassadors.

We believe that in the coming years, they will continue to build on the founding vision of the Tech Ambassadors as a group of students dedicated to promoting student entrepreneurship and technological innovation and to be an inspiring role model for younger students.

After all, the best way to predict the future is to invent it. We wish Serena and Hervé all the very best in their new roles.
