Japan’s first domestically produced passenger jet, the Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ), takes off from Nagoya airport in Aichi prefecture yesterday. The MRJ made its maiden test flight yesterday, a landmark in a decade-long program to launch the plane aimed at competing with Brazilian and Canadian rivals in the global market for smaller aircraft. The MRJ, made by Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, is about 35 meters long, has a pointed nose and will seat about 80 passengers. China is also developing a similar-sized homegrown regional passenger jet, the ARJ21.
